CFB SHEARWATER, SHEARWATER, NOVA SCOTIA
The project comprised of three large structures totaling 390,000 sq.ft. consisting of areas dedicated to warehouse, hangar, repair facility, training and office functions. The number of floors varies, based on use, from one storey at the hangar to three storeys at the training/office facility. All the buildings utilize a structural steel frame to support gravity loads and combination of bracing and shear walls for lateral wind and seismic resistance. The large hangar area, which is designed to support a fleet of 12-15 helicopters, is also designed to meet post-disaster requirements. Project highlights include; an elevated bridge structure connecting two of the buildings, in slab fire suppression system, a 106M X 64M (350 ft X 210 ft) clear span hangar, 6 bay maintenance/repair areas with individual hangar doors.
